On Tuesday, November 10th Jack Keller will take to the fly tying bench and teach us two versions of the Hammer Head fly. One of the versions is intended for carp and the other for inshore species like redfish.

The Carp Fly version looks similar to a crawfish. The extra weight is provided by tying in a series of bead chain eyes so that two beads protrude from each side. This should get the fly down to feeding carp. I've had a chance to make casts with the fly and found no problem at all casting it even in the wind.

The buggy pattern is certainly to immitate different prey species. Although it is labeled a carp fly here, I can't see why it wouldn't work on Guadalupe bass or large bream.

We're going to tie it on a saltwater hook just in case you get the urge to try it on the Laguna Madre. This pattern will be followed by another pattern. Although related its slightly different and intends to immitate a crab.

This fly looks even easier to cast than the carp version. Hopefully, it makes enough of a plop as it hits the water to catch a predator's attention. I wouldn't be surprised if a sheepshead doesn't think of it as a meal. Those rascals are sometimes picky and easily spooked and its appearance would not be threatening. The added beads shouldn't cause a loud enough sound to scare off a fish.

This pattern is very effective and has landed me my largest Laguna Madre redfish. Tied on a Mustad 37004 long shank hook it resembles a very noisy shrimp on the surface.

We'll be meeting at the Bass Pro Shop meeting room to the right as you come into the Fish Bowl Restaurant. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. Hope to see you there. Below is a sample of the Buggy Gurgler.
We are sending you this email for your information and just in case your latest edition of the Flyfisher magazine containing the Fair Registration Guide has not reached you yet. Fair registration will open June 8th at 9 am MST.
Before you register for the Fair you will need your membership number, or you can join when you register. If you cannot find your membership number, please call our office prior to June 8th. If you are not a member you can still register, however only members get discounted pricing on workshops.
We are open 8 am to 5 pm MDT. We will be inundated with phone calls the morning of June 8th and some workshops fill up quickly, so we strongly encourage you to call us prior to registration opening.
In order to give you a few extra days to peruse the available workshops, here is the Fair Registration Guide. To see new workshops, please go to the registration page, listed under Fly Fishing Fair on our web-page. Even if you are not taking workshops you must still register for the Fair to get name badge (for entrance to the Fair), a registration packet, and to purchase meal tickets. Meal tickets are limited for each meal, if you do not purchase your ticket early, you may miss out!
To register go to the Fair main page on our website and there will be a “Register Now” button for you to click to get started. Have your member number ready and we advise that it may help for you to fill it out the registration pages and have them beside you when you start. Don’t forget to have your credit card too.
Don't forget a fishing license! If you're planning to take on-the-water workshops or just do some recreational fishing while in Bend, you will need an Oregon fishing license; which you can buy online and print before you even leave your house! The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's website is where you can purchase licenses. This link (click here) will take you to an information page and the "Buy Now" button on the right is where you go to purchase.
Our host hotel this year is the Riverhouse Hotel and Convention Center. Rooms are filling up fast, make your reservations now!
We hope this information has been helpful to you and we hope to see you in Bend this August. Feel free to call our office if you have any questions.
Thanks,

This pattern is probably more well-suited to cold-water steelhead fisheries, but Jack Keller uses these flies for many of our inshore and near-shore species. If you have never tied a tube pattern, here's the day to learn. This is also a pattern that we're going to fish pretty soon under the lights.

One of those places was my friend's place on the Arroyo Colorado. As you learned from the previous post some of us got together to help with planting the sand dunes at South Padre Island. There we finalized plans to meet at Chili Willies for dinner and then head to a possible fishing spot that evening.

Before we headed to the fishing spot, we ate burgers, calamari, and several other Chili Willie's dishes. Of course, I had turned on the fishing lights to attract baitfish and shrimp, just to entice some seatrout and redfish to lurk before we got there. Charlie Villarreal, Mike Gonzalez, Sheala Castillo, Irma Ramirez, and my sister, Dora Rivas had a good time eating and drinking before heading to the fishing spot. Mike and Sheala's daughter, Isla, wanted to see a fish, so we couldn't disappoint her.

Both Mike and Charlie casted clouser-type flies into quiet water. Schools of baitfish would scatter at times. We were certain that predatory fish were below the water. At around nine, Mike and Sheala prepared to leave and went into the house to say their good-byes to Dora and Irma who were catching up on family things.

Charlie knew that the bait was a good indicator that something was making the bait nervously jump out of the water. Not long after Mike and Sheala went in to the house, Charlie hooked on to a small redfish. At first, we didn't know what that silvery fish was that was tugging so hard. It wasn't a keeper, but he was feisty. Charlie's rod had a good bend in it and it didn't show itself at first. Finally, we figured that it was a redfish and carefully brought it near the dock.

At the same time, I remembered Isla's wish and ran (OK, maybe not a real run) to the house. Mike, Sheala, and Isla came outside to see the outcome of Charlie's attempt to catch his first fish of the year. He was a happy camper and so was Isla. She starred at the fish with her eyes wide open and an unsure smile. Eventually, she was so comfortable with the site that she touched the fish.

We did our deed. Isla got to see and touch her fish. Her parents say that she "likes" fish. I think it was fitting to show her that fish are important to our natural world and she got to see all of us treating the fish with respect by releasing it to grow some more.

Hopefully, we can have more children come and join us at some future outings. The inclusion of moms, dads, and kids at events like these will help to raise awareness to the pleasures the outdoors brings us. Also, its noteworthy that participating in events that encourage service to the environment are important. Today's double duty was a good example of what we can do in the future.

We also need to remember that we're about fly fishing and that fly tying is only one part of the process. Events can be structured so that we can participate in fly tying earlier during the week, have a service event and follow it up with a fishing/social event. Hopefully, we took this opportunity as the first look at this venture as a possibility.

Charlie didn't end with his redfish that night. He followed it up with two keeper seatrout. The photographs that follow attest to his tube fly's ability to draw strikes even when the night is slow. I checked out the lunar tables and the fishing activity was slow. We were done by 10 p.m. and had three fish photographed and released. Can't ask for anything better. Congratulations Charlie.

The oyster and seagrass beds were visible on the shoreline from Highway 100 as we entered Laguna Heights. We were on our way to help out the folks from the the South Texas Chapter of the Surf Rider Foundation plant grass seedlings on South Padre Island. The sun was out and one could tell that it was going to be a beautiful morning. Even better was that we were going to do something that would help restore the dunes and provide protection for the dunes against future storms.

The light breeze brought a comfortable chill as we turned on Cora Lee to pick up our friend Brad York and his son, Diego. They would be joining us, as would several of the Rio Grande Valley Fly Tier's Club members. After a little conversation, we headed to our meeting location and mindful that we had planned to be on time.

The Surf Rider Foundation tent was at the entrance of Beach Access #14 on Bougainvillea Circle. The tent signalled that we had found our way. We waited for others to arrive, but I couldn't help but notice that we quickly made friends. Better so, or maybe because they were all like-minded people is a snap. Within a couple of minutes we were greeted and we greeted half a dozen couples. Our group signed the registration booth and entered "RGVFTC" to note our participation. The crowd kept growing and eventually it seemed like a hundred volunteers would make this task short.

Students from UTB, Master Naturalists, and many wonderful folks were out on the dunes to plant grass plants into ten inch holes. The holes were dug by a crew that quickly made enough holes to put a couple of plants before covering. We were told to not leave any air pockets because the growing plants could freeze. We did our best and eventually caught up to those drilling holes. We made them work hard.

One would think that 10,000 plants would be allot, but with everyone's help we were done by 10 a.m. Sheala Castillo, who had been to several of these events, said that we might be done by noon. That was the expectation if everything that went on before was the same. She said that the number of volunteers was three times more than what she had ever seen.

There is so much to learn when you attend an event like this, but what is better is that you get to help conserve our dunes and its wildlife and at the same time be happy from being out in nature. For me, it was also seeing kids learning to serve their community and protect their environment.

He is an expert in spinning and forming great deer hair bug patterns.

The fly tying session will be on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at Bass Pro Shop's meeting room to the right of the restaurant entrance.

The tying session is free for RGVFTC members in good standing and will be $3.00 for non-members. Come and join us.Natural Reflectionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05090220334818288614noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5560163161342640552.post-48347586261922308622015-01-19T18:27:00.002-08:002015-01-19T18:27:53.760-08:00January 2015 UpdateLife gets in the way of fun sometimes, but we managed to hold our RGVFTC social this past Saturday, January 17th. We enjoyed great conversation with our fly tying friends and the help of food and beverages. It was great to just sit back and catch up.

We all know that a party can't be complete without Linn's and Sheala's cookies. I got help with the wine selection and couldn't have asked for a more relaxing time. We were very blessed to have old friends and the opportunity to meet new friends. Dolly Castillo, Bill DiLibero, and Vicki Leggett joined us as new friends.

Mike Gonzalez, Sheala Castillo, Harry Leggett, Charlie Villareal, Linn Keller, Jack Keller, Irma Ramirez, Placida Zuniga, Robert Ramirez, and Yizza Ramirez helped to share the caloric wealth. Unfortunately, Rudy and Mary Castaneda weren't able to find the location and we truly missed their humor and conversation.

We had a quick discussion about the upcoming activities like the Sand Dune Restoration planting event on January 31st, the Ed Rizolo Fly Tying Festival scheduled for February 7th, and the Texas Expo 2015 in May. More information about these events can be found by clicking HERE.

The club will be investigating several places where we can hold family functions and training events. We're planning on meeting after the planting event at the end of the month. Hopefully, we can come up with a good schedule of events. Also, we have begun the post the next few fly tying sessions. The schedule is up website and will continue to be developed.

We need to start our reporting project and get this over to the IFFF soon.

Happy New Year and let's make this the best ever for the club.Natural Reflectionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05090220334818288614noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5560163161342640552.post-49737147132311677522015-01-12T14:44:00.000-08:002015-01-21T10:23:10.921-08:00Dune Restoration Project - Saturday, January 31, 2015The Rio Grande Valley Fly Tyers Club will again be helping to restore South Padre Island dunes on Saturday, January 31, 2015.
Although, it's not an easy pattern to tie for a beginner. However, we had several first time fly tiers do a marvelous job at their first session. That just means that the next one should be a breeze. Matthew Whittington took us through the steps of tying a fly created by his friend, Ron Ratliff. Thank you Ron for such a great pattern. If you read this, know that Matt did a great job taking us through our first edition.

The Rio Grande Valley Fly Tying group met last night at Bass Pro Shop's meeting room. From the photo I had posted earlier in the month, I knew it would attract some new and veteran tiers. We weren't disappointed. Microchenille was used for legs, small black bead chain for weight, elk hair for the body, and monofilament/beads for the eyes.

Matt demonstrated the preparation of both the eyes and the legs prior to beginning the pattern. From there it was a slow, meticulous process of adding on materials at the right place and at the right time.

Let's encourage others to make it to our fly tying sessions. Mike Gonzalez, Charlie Villarreal, and Matthew Whittington will be working on the 2015 fly selection which I hope to announce before the end of this month.

The flies should be a mixture of crab, shrimp, baitfish, and a freshwater pattern for a variety of Texas' gamefish.
This is my fourth visit to Oktoberfisch and hopefully if my health and timing is right, it won't be my last.
Over the last two years, I've attended and have had a chance to play a small part by helping by tying a saltwater fly fishing pattern. My contact was Dr. Guy Harrison. Doc Harrison was instrumental in helping to protect our state fish, the Guadalupe bass, that has been threatened by the introduction of small mouth bass that tend to breed and hybridize. This year due to health reasons, he wasn't able to attend. After all he has to slow down sometime now having reached the young age of 95. I'm trying to convince people that fly fishing helps you live longer and Doc is my testament that my theories is a possible explanation.
Gene Smith allowed me to help by tying the Peyton's redfish shrimp. The session was attended by several novice fly tiers. One of them was so excited because he learned to tie his first fly. Peyton's redfish shrimp is not a beginning fly tier's first fly, but those in attendance did a great job making a go of a difficult pattern. You could tell from their comments that they appreciated having an opportunity to tie a pattern.

Irma enjoying the wildflowers.

After the fly tying session, Irma and I headed to the water to try our look with several flies that I had tied. My fly box had a three-layered bug, olive woolly buggers, and plenty of crawfish patterns. Our Wilderness System rides were a little overkill for the river, but I was comfortable and felt it was worth the effort to bring them all the way from the Valley to fish the South Llano, a four hundred mile trip. Fortunately, the only mishap was losing the license plate between the Valley and Kerrville. I noticed it when we got down to photograph some flowers along the roadside.

One of the reasons for traveling to Junction is the opportunity to see fall flowers. The spring is probably the best time for taking pictures of wildflowers, but heading out to encounter cooler weather and see something more than bluebonnets, phlox, and Indian paintbrush gets me excited.

OK, back to the fishing stories. We paddled our way upstream from the park. Usually we rent kayaks or get shuttled up river by South Llano Canoe and Kayak Outfitters, but this year they weren't going to open up for business until the following week.
Irma took these spectacular pictures of the color combination that makes this part of the Texas so picturesque. We were blessed with beautiful skies and cool morning temperatures. Even though we headed out right before lunch the air temperature was near the high 70's. The wind was calm and as I paddled the edge of the bank, I found it easy to position the kayak to make short casts to the undercut banks and grass growing near the edges. I only lost one woolly bugger on a tree branch. That was my mistake by being pretty determined to get as close to the bank as possible. But if you don't hit close, then there is a chance you won't catch fish. Irma stayed near the shade of the trees. One of the neat thing about the area is that other kayak fishermen greet you and offer to comments that give you an idea about where and how to fish. We in return offered what ever information we could provide.

After several casts, I had several strikes probably from bluegill. I took aim at a hole near the bank and after two strips got a strong bite. A small Guadalupe bass had taken my olive woolly bugger. It's amazing the fight and strength of these fish. Of course, its nothing like fighting a redfish even one that just makes the minimum size, but for the size these bass make you think of fighting larger fish. Their bite is a definite tug.

Aside from the fight, they are pretty fish. This isn't a large or mature fish, but it's typical for the fish caught along the river banks within Junction, Texas' city limits. After catching two cute bluegill, I caught up with Irma and decided to go to lunch.
Last year we stopped at Junction River Winery and decided to make a second trip. The idea was to not have too much to eat since we were going to a barbecue that evening. Of course, that didn't mean that I couldn't have a couple of glasses of wine. My choice was to start with a glass of a carbernet-merlot blend called Reunion de Bluitre or reunion of the buzzards. It was good, in fact so good, that I brought a bottle home.

The rest of the light meal included wild boar sausage, eye of round with a mild horseradish spread, a cilantro spread, candied pecans, olives, apple slices, a couple of cheeses, and grapes. Irma ordered a scoop of vanilla ice cream and shared it.

The folks at the winery were very pleasant and we got a chance to take photographs of the food and they even offered to take a picture of us enjoying the afternoon. I'm glad they did because later on I got the idea to ask others to take pictures of us as we enjoyed our trip.
Our hostess told us that she was going to be working on a project with Texas Tech University extension and providing aquatic education classes to local area children. We told her about our interest in working with kids on the same topic. She explained that her experience included working on a game ranch before coming to Junction about five years earlier. The ranch was somewhere in the Houston area.

It's amazing how much you can learn about people and how much in common you have with them. Who would have known that our hostess would have similar interests.

Later we experienced the same thing with a couple from Floresville, Texas and another Oktoberfisch participant from Austin. What we had in common is our interest in small recreational vehicles. They both invited us to see their little campers. One was a Flagstaff A-Frame and another was a small teardrop shaped trailer made by Camp-Inn. Both were a little over $10,000, but the design was truly remarkable. Every little bit of space was utilized to contain the most essential conveniences.
Our friends from Floresville took the picture on the right. Doesn't it seem like a wonderful afternoon. It was even made better by the entertainment hired by the Oktoberfish organizers. The little local band from Kerrville was the "4 Proaches". The family band had what Irma thought was the cutest little mandolin player. It reminded her of one of our friends little boy. The older 21 year old brother played the guitar, the 18 year old the bango, and their sister provided wonderful harmony. It was a great afternoon free of mosquitoes and flies. These critters usually can put a damper on the best occasion.

The steak was delicious and the company was great. Every year we win something during the raffle. This year we only bought $20 worth of tickets. Both Irma and I took the tickets we had split and put them in the raffle boxes. We thought we weren't going to win anything and were surprised to have won a double fly rod case. I was really hoping to win it and when they called out the numbers, I was in disbelief, but happy to take my $20 investment home. The retail price of the Simm's rod case is $90.

Hopefully, this post will get people thinking about joining us next year at Oktoberfish. We have made such great friends over the years. Bringing more people interested in fly fishing would make us happy. You can learn so much regardless of your skill level. It was announced that the organizers were going to try and get Master Certified casting instructors to the event. I hope they can pull this off.
Even though there are many aspects of a presentation what is essential is the ability of a caster to properly align the rod and line to the intended target. On Saturday, October 25, 2014 we will go through these essentials and learn to make accurate casts at short, medium, and long distances.

The class will be held from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. at the home of Dr. Rey Ramirez on 31940 Cactus Road, San Benito, Texas. Participants are asked to bring a lawn chair, water, cap, and sunglasses. Please refer to the weather and dress appropriately.

Contact Rey by texting 956-639-3426 or emailing him at reyram49@gmail.com. Attendees should have an understanding of basic casting skills. If in doubt, let Rey know and he'll go over what those are. If you have been to the sessions below, your ready to go.
We have a change in the line up for this month. Jack Keller convinced his friend, Terry Eddelman to tie his "Chewy Shrimp". He'll be bringing the materials and examples. Apparently its a multi-stage process and requires some drying time. Hope to see all members of the RGVFTC there. If you would like to join our club, come over, we'll have forms or you can print them off from this site and bring them to the meeting. Non-members will be charged a nominal fee for the fly.

On September 16, 2014 this will be the fly to learn for those that want to join me at Oktoberfisch in Junction, Texas. Last year Woolly Buggers and crawfish were the ticket to catching Guadalupe Bass and Panfish.

The session will start at 6:30 p.m. Join us. Here's pictures of this fly.
